I had the opportunity to visit this amazing new hotel near Shanghai over my "Thanksgiving Break." (OK, the Chinese don't really celebrate the USA's Thanksgiving holiday, but the best part of working with customers from all over the world is that we get to adopt their best holiday!)
This hotel, sometimes called Shimao Quarry Hotel, Songjiang or Pit Pegasus Hotel, was finished in November 20, 2018 and was actually constructed in an abandoned quarry. It has 18 stories, 16 of which are below ground level including two projected underwater floors. The abandoned quarry is partially filled with water to create an artificial lake and it's used for recreation like you can take a row around. If you look at the steep walls to the left, they are used for rock climbing. While the hotel is almost an hour from Shanghai, if you have time, it's definitely worth a visit to have a drink in the lobby and get some amazing pictures (I'm sure you can do better than the one I took above :)
You can also reserve dinner, enjoy tea in the bottom floor bar and much more to explain here. Don't forget to get reservations. More information and booking about this can be found here.
From Wikipedia: "The hotel is designed in an "S" shape utilizing a convex to concave form. The architects' vision is one of sequential hanging gardens that will produce the effect of a green hill extending down the face of the quarry. Both the quarry's rock face and the wings of the blocks of guest rooms are projected to surround an atrium within the hotel. The vertical atrium made of glass will (above the hotel) is intended to symbolize an artificial "waterfall."
